Should I try again for NID next year?

The number of student intake at NID is fixed.

Frankly speaking, there are few seats…..

For every NID aspirant who gets in, there are thousands who face rejection.

Every student who doesn’t make it to NID, faces a similar dilemma.

“Should I try for NID again next year?

                     OR

Should I take admission elsewhere?”

Now, there are no right or wrong answers to these questions, but I would like to make some suggestions here based on my experience.

First of all, if you didn’t crack NID, there is no reason to be sad.

NID is among the best design colleges in the world, but ……

The competition is real high

And it doesn’t mean that you are not talented enough.

I’ve written a separate blog post on the topic “What if I do not get into NID?” where I’ve talked about what is your Plan B, if you do not make into NID.

But the topic of the discussion here is…..

Should you take a gap year to try again for NID?

The answer is not a straightforward “Yes” or “No”

But I’ll try to simplify it as much as possible…..

Most of the NID B.Des aspirants make first attempt along with 12th boards.

From those, who are unable to clear in the first attempt……

Some wish to attempt again, the following year (Normally B.Des Aspirants can attempt twice or thrice till they cross the Nid Age Eligibility Criteria)

Now, there can be 2 situations in this case:

SITUATION 1: Re-attempt NID, take a gap year

Students take a drop assuming they have all the time for the preparations. They don’t take admission in any college/university.

Though there is nothing wrong in the above strategy, I’ve seen it failing miserably, because of the following reasons:

  • The student initially takes it easy assuming the preparations can be done later. So much time at hand without discipline, focus & proper routine does not serve any purpose.
  • When they see their peers & friends taking admission in various colleges/universities and moving on with their academic careers, they mentally feel they have lagged behind, which is a big de-motivator.
  • As the exam draws near, the pressure to perform rises. Parental & Societal expectations further add to the woes. The fear of facing rejection one more time is huge.

In light of the above situations, the student scores even less marks than the preceding year.

And the story ends in a heart break.

I’m not advocating against a drop year, but to attain positive results one must have a proper strategy in place and a determined will to execute it.

The second option has a higher chance at success:

SITUATION 2: Re-attempt NID, but take admission in B.Des elsewhere

In this case, the student has the intention to attempt NID again next year, but takes admission in a design course in other college or university.

Why this strategy has a higher success rate?

  • The student takes admission in first year of B.Des programme. The course provides fresh learning opportunities in design where he/she gets in touch with new friends, mentors and teachers. The student gains exposure and confidence in this one year of grooming at a design campus.
  • A regular routine also provides the discipline for NID preparation on weekend or holidays.
  • While attempting NID again next year, the student is free from any kind of pressure to perform.

In the second case, the chances of cracking NID is definitely higher…..

By ensuring admission in another college, the unnecessary stress is removed.

If you are considering attempting NID again, I will definitely advice to go with Situation 2.
