What is NID?

National Institute of Design (NID) at Ahmedabad and its Gandhinagar & Bengaluru extension campuses is an 'Institute of National Importance' as per the NID Act 2014 as well as an autonomous institute under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India. As per the NID Act 2014, the Institute is a statutory authority empowered to award its own degrees - presently offering Bachelor of Design (B Des) of four year duration, Master of Design (M Des) of two and a half year duration and PhD in Design. 

NID Andhra Pradesh, NID Haryana, NID Madhya Pradesh and NID Assam are an independent autonomous institute under the DPIIT, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India and offer full time four year .Bachelor of Design (B Des.) 

ABOUT NID

National Institute Of Design is an 'Institute of National Importance' declared by the Act of Parliament, by virtue of the National Institute Of Design Act 2014. It is also recognized by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Government of India as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organization. After the passing of the Bill, NID can now provide degrees and Ph.Ds to the students. NID is the forty-first institute to be declared as Institutions of National Importance.

NID is internationally acclaimed as one of the foremost multi-disciplinary institutions in the field of design education and research. The institute functions as an autonomous body under the department of Industrial Policy & Promotion, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. 

NID offers B.Des & M.Des programmes with 5 faculty streams and 20 diverse design domains.

NID HISTORY

National Institute of Industrial Design, as it was originally called was an autonomous all - India body established by the Government of India in September 1961 with the assistance of the Ford Foundation & the Sarabhai family. In the initial years of its establishment, Gautam Sarabhai & his sister Gira played a major role.

NID WORLD RANKING

National Institute of Design (NID) has been placed in the list of top 25 European and Asian programmes in the world by Business Week, USA. Also NID has been a pioneer in industrial design education after Bauhaus and Ulm in Germany.

NID Hostel

NID offers separate Hostel facilities for boys and girls as per availability.

The facility is currently available only for Bdes students at Ahmedabad Campus and for M Des students at Gandhinagar Campus.

NID's campuses at Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar can approximately accommodate 450 and 200 students respectively.

NID Bangalore is a Non-Residential Campus.

Hostel accomodation is allotted every academic year on a single or shared occupancy.

Priority for Hostel facility is given to outstation students.

Each Hostel has a warden who looks after its day to day functioning.

 

The Student Mess is run by the Institute on a contractual basis and a Student's Mess Committee oversees its operations.

Full subscription to the Mess facilities is compulsory for all Hostel residents.
